Mum: Such ordinary things make me afraid. Sunshine. White roses. Children with red hair. And the name-Harry. Such an ordinary name!
Narrator: -Christine is a very young girl when she first mentions the name: Harry. She is five years old and she is starting school in three months.
Christine was playing in the garden when it happened.
Christine: -Hello. - (After a pause) – Yes. My name is Christine. And I live with my mummy and daddy. I am five years old and I’m starting school in three months.
Mum: (she hears Christine and goes out of the house) -Chris, what are you doing? Come indoors now. I’ll prepare you a cup of milk.
Christine:- Oh! I must go now. My mum is calling me! Goodbye!
Mum: -Christine, what were you doing?
Christine: -Playing in the garden
Mum: -But I heard you talking. Who were you talking to?
Christine: -I was talking with Harry.
Mum: -Who’s Harry? I told you not to talk to strangers. Who is he?
Christine: -He is Harry!
Narrator: -After drinking the cup of milk, Christine starts playing with a toy and the Dad arrives
Dad: -Oh. Hi, darling. How are you?
Christine: (stops playing and greets her Dad) –Hi Daddy!-(she continues playing)
Mum: -Hi... I’m a bit worried about Christine. She was playing in the garden and she was talking to the white roses! And when I asked her who she was talking to, she just said it was “Harry”.
Dad: (Laughing) –It’s very usual for little children to have an imaginary friend. She has no brothers or sisters, so she imagines someone. When she starts school, she’ll make friends and she’ll have someone to play with. Don’t worry!
Mum: -I Know... But it’s just that I feel extra responsible for her. More so than if I were her real mother.
Dad: -Yes. But Chris is all right. Everything is fine.
Narrator: -The next morning, Christine is in the garden staring at the white roses and the grass.
Christine:-Hello. I knew you would come! I’m starting school in three months. Do you go to school?-(After a pause and nodding)-Oh. Tell me about you, and then we could play together.
Narrator: -Christine is silent for a while, nodding, and listening.
Mum: (She appears from the house) -Christine! Come here!
Christine: -Well, my Mummy is calling me. I must go. We can play some other day! Bye, Harry!
Mum: -Who is Harry, Chris?
Christine: -Harry is my brother. He is fourteen and he’s very tall. He’s got red hair. Redder than mine.
Mum: -But Chris. You haven’t got a brother. You are an only child.
Christine: -Harry is my brother. I’m sure. I’m not lying.
Mum: -I know you aren’t lying. But, why are you so sure?
Christine: -He says so.
Narrator: -Another week passes. It is Harry, Harry all the time. The day Christine is starting school, Chris says,
Christine: -I won’t go to school without Harry. I want to be with Harry. He’s my brother!
Mum: -Chris, stop please. Go to school. C’mon.
Christine: (crying)-Harry will go away if I do!
Mum: -You’ll have other friends at school.
Narrator: Finally, the Mum and Christine go to school. They don’t speak a word
At school:
Mum: (a bit sad) -Good luck, Chris.
Christine: Bye.
